The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. It is also the center of the nervous system, giving it control over other organs in the body. Olive Polyphenols Help Brain Cells and Mitochondria
Brain endothelial cells are responsible for regulating blood flow, modulating the inflammatory response and trafficking nutrients into the brain. MnSOD can protect mitochondria from age-associated damage28. Damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria have been linked with many neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease12. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, and it is associated with a toxic protein known as beta-amyloid32,33. Hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein have been reported to protect against beta-amyloid aggregation and/or plaques33-35.
