Your Body is a Machine

Much like a car, your body is a complicated machine with many parts and systems working together to make everything run smoothly and efficiently. Some parts may seem more important than others, but they all work together to contribute to the overall function, safety, and reliability of the whole vehicle.

Human Body MachineSome of the systems in your body are remarkably similar to a car. For example, you have:

  • A fuel system to feed the engine and create energy (circulatory system, blood and mitochondria)
  • An electrical system, computer and circuit boards to coordinate everything (nerves and brain)
  • A solid frame and suspension system to help provide stability and maneuverability (bones and joints)

All of these systems, plus many more, all come together to create a functioning machine.  If you do not perform the required maintenance, there is a lot that can go wrong.  Some issues might be a simple annoyance, such as a hangnail (burnt out headlight). Other issues might be life altering, like developing Alzheimer’s disease (malfunctioning computer/electronics).

Routine Maintenance

Most of us can admit that we could probably do a little better job performing the “routine maintenance” on our bodies. That may mean eating a healthier diet, exercising more often, drinking more water, or getting adequate sleep.  But it’s important to remember that combining all of these behaviors is much more effective than just picking one or two.

There are some types of routine maintenance that have more benefits than others.  For example, replacing a rusty part on your car may take care of that problem for now, but it does not address why the part got rusty in the first place. Routinely taking actions that prevent rust, like washing and waxing the vehicle, will provide long-term rust protection to that part and every other part on the vehicle.

To compare that to human health – you can take a cholesterol lowering medication to improve your cholesterol levels, but that likely will not address some of the reasons why they were elevated in the first place.  Incorporating dietary changes and routine physical activity is likely to have more benefits and longer-lasting effects on your entire body.

Over the next few weeks, I will discuss different types of “routine maintenance” that you can work into your daily routine to help protect your body from sickness and disease. I hope it helps encourage you to take action and start incorporating some of these suggestions into you and your family’s health plan to keep your body "on the road".

To start off the series, I want to talk about an issue that affects all of our bodies all the time: Oxidative Damage - also known as "rust."

What Causes Rust?

Rust is formed by a chemical process called oxidation. This same process also occurs naturally throughout your body creating "free radicals" that go on to damage proteins, DNA, cell membranes, and more if they are not neutralized. The damage caused by free radicals is essentially biological rust that forms in your cells, causing significant damage. You experience this as inflammation, premature aging, and disease.

Unhealthy lifestyles, aging, illness, and nutritional deficiencies all contribute to an increase in oxidative stress throughout your body, just like water and salt cause your car to rust faster.1–3

Preventing Oxidative Damage

We prevent oxidative damage on a car by applying protective coatings and washing and waxing it regularly, especially before and after it’s been exposed to things that can promote rust, such as road salt.

We can protect our cells from oxidative damage by providing them with antioxidants that protect them from free radicals. Think of antioxidants as cellular car wax that protects them and keeps them shining like new!

Repairing Rust

Despite the best possible care, oxidation is going to occur. Fortunately, your body has built in mechanisms that can protect your body from oxidative damage and even repair some of the damage internally.
